TV GUIDES

So much TV. So little time to watch. Here’s what you should be watching this month.

YELLOWJACKETS (Showtime)

Why: Season 1 rocketed into the zeitgeist, and now we pick up where we left off… how do the (remaining) girls get back? What’s happening with the cannibalism? What badass 90s needle drop is coming your way? The mixture of current and nostalgia, freakiness and fun, is not to be missed. And in our personal opinion… we just can’t get enough of Misty.

When: New episodes stream Fridays on Showtime & Paramount+, and air Sundays on Showtime.

– Caitlin McFarland, Co-President and Co-Founder

JURY DUTY (Amazon Freevee)

Why:  One fake case, 11 fake jurors — and one Regular Guy named Ronald, just trying to do his civic duty. Jury Duty manages to capture the absurdity of our judicial system, the inanity of celebrity, and the spiritual vibe of being the only one in your group actually trying to do the assignment without ever making its unsuspecting subject the punchline. Treat yourself now, and then join the creative team the festival this June to hear how they pulled it all off.

When: First 4 episodes are available now on Amazon Freevee, with new episodes dropping on Fridays.

TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS (Hulu)

Why: After seeing a conversation with Cheryl Strayed and Liz Tigelaar at SXSW, I immediately went and listened to the Cheryl-read audio book of Tiny Beautiful Things. I now want her to give me advice on every aspect of my life. I’m interested in how Cheryl’s beautiful words and Liz’s ability to craft layered emotional characters come together in the form of a TV show. I have my Kleenex ready.

When: All 8 episodes are streaming now, on Hulu.

– Emily Gipson, Co-President and Co-Founder

BEEF (Netflix)

Why: A sure-handed dark comedy from Lee Sung Jin with transcendent performances from Ali Wong & Steven Yeun, a layer of simmering rage, an affinity for ’90s/’00s rock, and a sprinkling of Barry and Dead to MeBeef is exactly what you’ve been craving.

When & Where: Available to binge right now, on Netflix.

– Jenn Morgan, Director of Programming

SEASON 12 HOMEWORK

Watching TV: The best kind of homework assignment.

JUSTIFIED

Is Justified: City Primeval a reboot? No. A remake? No. Is it Raylan Givens in Detroit? IT IS! We may be embarking on a new story, but our same straight shooting hero is headed to the city to serve up his own version of justice. What better way to prepare for this new adventure than to rewatch the original (currently available on FX on Hulu).  And if you can only pick one season may we recommend Season 2 (two names… Kaitlyn Dever and Margo Martindale.)

MANIFEST

After finding a second life on Netflix thanks to binge viewing and a dedicated fanbase, Manifest makes it’s final descent on June 2 — but you still have plenty of time to catch up! Stream the first 3.5 seasons now on Netflix, and then join us (and the showrunner + cast) at this year’s festival for the premiere of Season 4 Part 2.

– Jenn Morgan, Director of Programming

OUTLANDER

Friends, Droughtlander is coming to an end! “World Outlander Day” is coming up fast (that’s June 1st for folks who aren’t counting down the days), and we’re so excited we get to celebrate with a conversation with the cast & creatives of Outlander, including an exclusive first look at the seventh season. If you haven’t had a chance to travel back in time and meet Jamie and Claire, it’s time to do your homework and get caught up!

IN THE QUEUE

A little something to look forward to.

FATAL ATTRACTION (Paramount+)

A fresh spin on the ’90s thriller starring Josh Jackson and Lizzy Caplan? Yes, we’ll be watching. In fact, Austinites can join us for an early screening of the first two episodes on April 27th at AFS Cinema. (Let’s just say there’s good reason to see these on the big screen.) RSVP link coming soon!

Fatal Attraction premieres April 30th on Paramount+.

– JENNIFER MORGAN, DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING

LOVE & DEATH
(HBO Max)
There’s too many reasons not to try this series. The obvious: Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, David E Kelley and Lesli Linka Glatter. The hidden: Texas Monthly article comes to the screen, 1970s/80s style, the music, and quite unexpectedly… the humor. Don’t let the murder fool you – there’s depth and complexity to this series and you should give it a try!

Love & Death premieres April 27 on HBO Max.

– CAITLIN MCFARLAND, CO-PRESIDENT & CO-FOUNDER

MRS. DAVIS
(Peacock)

Betty Gilpin as a nun vs. an all-powerful A.I. called Mrs. Davis. Jake McDorman with an A+ mustache. A road trip. Lots of jam. A holy grail. A giant donut. Margo Martindale.

You’re just gonna have to trust us and watch this one. Mrs. Davis premieres April 20th on Peacock.

– Jenn Morgan, Director of Programming

NOW PLAYING

TV, but for your ears.

TV's Top Five: Shawn Ryan on WGA Negotiations & "The Night Agent"

“TV’s Top 5” Showrunner Spotlights are consistently insightful — and this conversation with ATX TV alum Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Terriers) is no exception. Ryan chats about his new Netflix hit The Night Agent, and also shares his POV on the WGA negotiations, the likelihood of a writers strike, and what it means for the short & long-term future of TV. If you’re at all interested in the inner workings of the industry, this conversation is definitely worth a listen.
